Having a few extra things at home can really spruce up your home workout routine! It doesn’t take much to help you really mix things up and take your home practice to a whole new level. We’ve been checking in with our teachers to find out what their favorite gear is to have at home so that we can pass on the information to you, and Nicole Quibodeaux’s recommendations are coming at the perfect time. If you’ve been struggling to come up with gifts for your fitness or yoga loving loved ones, or maybe having a hard time thinking about what you might want for yourself this year, this list might help to get the wheels turning.

Nicole narrowed down her list to these 5 items. Apart from the large physio ball, these are portable, easily stored and inexpensive, so they won’t be taking up unnecessary space or breaking the bank. Plus they are versatile and can be used in so many different ways. Nicole loves having props and tools on hand because they can help to either amp things up when you want the challenge or offer more support on those days you when you need it. The more we can adapt our at home routine, the more we can not only train our bodies, but also our brains, for better functioning and balance off the mat.

NICOLE’S TOP FIVE FAVES:

NICOLE’S TOP FIVE FAVES:

1) YOGA TUNE UP® THERAPY BALLS

Myofascial release is a technique that involves applying sustained pressure to the connective tissues in the body in order to improve circulation, break up tension and tightness, restore mobility and even reduce pain. There are a lot of tools to do this, from massage to rollers to myofascial release balls. Nicole’s favorites are these Yoga Tune Up® Therapy Balls. Not only can you use these any time of day, at home or office, but they’ll also be helpful to have on hand for Nicole’s classes on Devata, where she’ll guide you through some tried and trusted techniques.

2) YOGA PROPS: 2 BLOCKS, 1 STRAP, 1 BLANKET

Alright, Nicole’s cheating a little here! But we totally get why she chose these three quintessential yoga props. These three will pretty much be all you need to modify and adjust the postures to suit your needs. Sure there are some other things you might want to have on hand as your add to your home gear, but these are the basics. And there are some great wholesale websites, such as Yoga Direct, where you can buy them really inexpensively. Definitely worth the investment so your home practice can be everything you want it to be!

3) PILATES MAGIC CIRCLE

The Magic Circle is a Pilates tool created by Joseph Pilates. It adds a some additional resistance to your Pilates exercises, offering you that little extra punch! It also helps you to bring your awareness to certain muscles so that you can be sure you are moving through the exercises safely and mindfully.

4) THERABANDS

Therabands are great to add to your home gear kit because you can do so much with them. Whether you want to build strength in the arms or are looking to rehab an injury with some gentle, but effective strength-building exercises, these resistance bands are there to help. Plus they are extremely light, so you can bring them with you almost anywhere. They come in different resistance levels, so as you continue to build strength you can progress to more challenging bands. Nicole loves to incorporate these into her classes to help you to build strength and endurance throughout your body.

5) PHYSIO BALL

Physio balls, also commonly referred to as an exercise ball or Swiss Ball, help to improve balance and strength. They are often used in core and back strengthening exercises, as the instability of ball creates the need to recruit additional stabilizing muscles in the body. However, the physio ball is useful  for many things. We also love it as a helpful tool to open the front of the body in some longer held, gentle backbends or even challenging ourselves as we build towards press-up handstands on the days we’re feeling STRONG!
